„Smart textiles, Integration, Challenges and the Future“

Smart textiles have been “around” for many years now, Philips research in collaboration with Levi produced a smart jacket in 1997. But what actually are smart textiles? Depending on your background, the definition of smart textiles varies considerably. The aim of this talk is to discuss the variation in smart textiles and how the “smart” can be integrated into a textile structure. Moreover, as a research institute that is active in the field of smart textiles, what challenges have been our main stumbling blocks. Lastly the future of smart textiles, from a research scientist point of view will be discussed.

Barnaby Caven

Dr. Barnaby Caven– received his Ph.D. in 2010, from the University of Leeds, UK, where he conducted cross faculty research between materials engineering and technical textiles. Thus, gain a detailed knowledge of both the materials and textile world. Since 2011, Barnaby joined the research institute for textile physics and textile chemistry as a postdoc, working in the COMET K project Sports Textiles. Following this, Barnaby became a key research in the Competence Center Sports Textiles and again in 2017 for the K-Project: Textile Competence Center Vorarlberg (TCCV). During this period further enhancement of Barnaby’s research portfolio was made. Furthermore project management skills were learnt and then further honed in the TCCV.
